DCEU Phase 1 Review

With Marvel Studios aka the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) being the dynasty that it is, DC is now getting into the movie business as well. They previously have made Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and their newest movie Justice League. This isn’t technically “Phase 1” but it is the closest thing to it. Throughout their entire franchise, DC has been under many controversies over their movies. It is unfair to compare the movies to their “rival” counter part Marvel. The first movie of the franchise was Man of Steel. The backstory and introduction of Superman himself. Next came Batman v Superman where they officially started the DCEU with Batman, Lex Luthor, and Wonder Woman. It also hinted at some of the members of the Justice League members (Aquaman, Cyborg, Flash). Then, they made Suicide Squad, where a bunch of villains had their own story and introduced them to the universe. Wonder Woman followed after that and fully introduced Diana Prince and the rest of the Amazons and her backstory. Lastly came their biggest project yet with Justice League. This was the team up of all the characters seen so far other than the characters in Suicide Squad. This was supposed to set up DC’s biggest villain in Darkseid but they changed it. I thought Justice League was okay, but had potential to be great if they didn’t change so much and wasn’t cut down to two hours. I know there were so many problems with the film with the tragedy of the Snyder family, the CGI mishap, and all the reshoots. I think they should have delayed the film and taken the time to fix those mistakes rather than just throw it together quickly and not make it the best it could be. I am one of the few people who don’t necessarily think that the DCEU is that bad, but I believe that they are already destined to fail before they put their movies out there. If you look at the DCEU out of the five movies they have made only one of them was a hit (Wonder Woman), other than that all the rest have been okay at best. The reason that I believe that they are destined to fail is because of two reasons. Reason number one is that they have to go through Warner Brothers. This is a major problem because Warner Brothers should allow DC to have full control of what they want to do. To me, the biggest villain of the DCEU is Warner Brothers Studios. They cut down the films, change things up, and are just killing their franchise before it takes off. My 2nd reason why is the writing/vision of the creators. They don’t really have a true plan or if they do it isn’t a good one. I feel that they dove into this universe too quickly with Justice League being their fifth movie without introducing some of the characters first. I know they want to do their own path, but I feel that they should have done a similar approach to what Marvel did in their phase 1. They should have had solo movies for each other characters before having a team up movie. This way you can set up the universe and have better direction for the future. I still have hope that the DCEU can turn it around but they have to do some major rethinking /planning of their direction of the universe. As long as Warner Brothers is in control and the writing stays the same, I don’t see this universe being as good as it can be. If I would review the individual movies they’d be: Man of Steel: 7/10, Batman v Superman: 7/10, Suicide Squad: 5/10, Wonder Woman: 9/10, Justice League: 6.5/10. I would recommend some of these because most are entertaining movies but just the universe needs work.

Overall Phase 1 Review: 6.9/10

Black Panther Movie Review: (Warning for Some Spoilers)

Black Panther is Marvel Studio’s newest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa / Black Panther and Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger / Golden Jaguar. Some background information for anyone who doesn’t know but the movie takes place in small country in Africa named Wakanda. To the world, Wakanda is a small third world country but secretly they are the richest country in the world. They are known for harvesting a rare metal called Vibranium that hit Wakanda by meteorite long ago. This is the strongest metal in the world. They used this metal to reshape their entire city. The radiation from the Vibranium have changed their flora and fauna. There was a heart shaped herb that transformed anyone who would drink it. It would give them enhanced strength, speed, and reflexes that of a Black Panther who later would become the protector of Wakanda.

To get the most out of this movie you have to have seen Captain America: Civil War because this movie takes place after the events in Civil War where we were first introduced to the Black Panther. After the death of T’Challa’s father, someone had to step in the role of King of Wakanda and wear the title Black Panther. T’Challa is the rightful heir to the throne but with this comes competition for the crown. This movie is a power struggle for the throne and also a internal struggle of T’Challa to not make the same mistakes his ancestors did, and to decide what kind of King he is going to be. Michal B. Jordan plays the main antagonist of the film and does a great job as an equal to Chadwick Boseman. I would say this movie isn’t at all similar to anything Marvel has done before but it totally works and is a great movie. It hits on the African culture very well and also made a great hero plot as well. The movie has a good blend of a serious movie with some comedy. Just like any other Marvel movie, there are 2 end credit scenes that are important but nothing too serious. Obviously this movie is the last Marvel movie until their biggest project yet of Avengers: Infinity War where we will see T’Challa return as the Black Panther. I would recommend this movie to everyone because it has a great story and the visual affects are very cool too. Also for all of you who like Rap music, the soundtrack for the movie is very good too including artists like: The Weekend, Future, and Kendrick Lamar. Definitely go and see it!

Rating: 9/10
